Christmas 2011

We had a god Christmas albeit small. We stayed here in Acworth and had Christmas Eve dinner and gifts with Kathy's kids and grand-kids. Christmas Day Kathy and I spent together at home enjoying one another.
Kathy got a wonderful 11 x 14 framed picture of her children and grands.

I am now a Patriot Guard Rider

I have been on two missions. A WWII Navy veteran and a Marine who was KIA Oct 13.

At LCPL Scott Harper's funeral besides the overwhelming support of the community there was over 300 motorcycles of the Patriot Guard, American Legion Riders and 3 Christian Motorcycle Clubs. The highway from the funeral home to the church , about 5 miles was lined with people waving flags and showing their respect.

Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protesters.

Picked up this 1996 Suzuki Intruder 800 yesterday. Hoping the 50+mpg will help cut my costs. The geomobile gets 18 mph on a good day with a tailwind. The 85 mile round trip commute is getting costly as gas increases.

I have to come up with a name. Thinking La Burra , a female burro lol.

We both took a Friday off and drove up to the GA NC mountains. We visited the Great Smokie Mountain National Forest. We had a little hike and did some caches and had a good time.

Not much happening. We had a great Christmas, then in Jan I found out my store would close. They had no MGR posting open so I took a demotion and pay cut and now work at the
Atlanta Support Center warehouse.
Kathy was laid off from the Drs office and is working full time temp and still at Macy's part time.

Kathy has visited her
mom who had her 80th birthday. Kathy helped he move to her new smaller house. The 4 bedroom split level was too much.

I just had a caching weekend in Nashville TN. Well it was a 20 hour day . We did 52 caches visited the GPS maze, 3 webcam caches, 6 virtuals, 1 puzzle, 1 multi cache and the rest regular caches. This gave us the qualification to do the Bust Day Challenge cache in Chattanooga.
Eleven of us from GA and Jgooose dove down down from Illinois.

Halloween Weekend.

We had a great time at A Spooky Breakfast With Thorny1 in Pine Mountain, GA.Event After helping cook breakfast then fellowship with others we visited Warm Springs. We stopped by the Little White House where FDR stayed when here in town. We toured the Warm Springs Baths that FDR bought and helped study the healing effect the waters had on people. Then back home for the trick or treaters.

Well we drove 622 miles today and arrived in Williamsburg, VA.
We did one cache in North Carolina that was all we had time for.
We checked into our digs for the week then had awesome dinner. Tomorrow a few virtual caches and a luncheon and maybe a sundown cruise.

Ok so it is Labour day it is back to Virgina. This trip we will be going to Williamsburg. We have a week there and will also do a few day trips. we hope to go to D.C. one day to see the Museum of Natural History. Maybe we will run into Ben Stiller!

Memorial Day weekend.

Kathy will be heading to Indiana to visit family and celebrate 2 graduations. Her nephew from High School and his sister from Drake University with a doctorate in Pharmacology.

We had no one to sit the dogs so I was staying home, but then Lauren moved home and I get to leave for the weekend.
So a geocaching run to New Orleans with Jgooose, Thorny 1 and 1/2 of the Jazzmaster Team.
I'll keep you posted.

We had a great time and saw a wonderful cache and did complete the power run.
We got 190 caches!
Nothing wrong with the number as we had a blast of a time. We also got a FTF in New Orleans. Replaced 6 caches and many log sheets.Only had the police talk to us once ( in Alabama) drove 1240 miles and spent to nights in a inexpensive hotel. Jgooose got to drive a WWII1943 Willis Jeep! I got #4000 Jgooose got #3000, Thorny1 broke 4200 and Fred got two new state and built his lead in cache numbers.
So Fred summed the trip up:

Trip to Texas To Visit Family. July 2009

On July 19th I drove to Fate Texas to visit my daughter Heather, daughter Shannon and her Husband Michael and their 2 boys Ben and Will.
Had a nice drive out and a good time visiting everyone.

Over the last six years GeoWoodstock has grown from a small event at a local park to an event that has filled a state park, a fairground and a huge farm. Well for the seventh annual event, we are taking over an entire town. Let me be this first to invite you all to join us as we take over the town of Bell Buckle, Tennessee for a geocaching mega event like no other.

We took the dogs with us they had fun getting out of the house. Drive up was 2.5 hours then stayed there for 4 houes then drove home. We met many new cachers and saw some old friends.

We had a great busy Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In October we drove to Indiana to see Kathy's Mom and celebrate her brother George and my birthday.

She flew home and I drove up to Canada to see my Sister's family for Thanksgiving, Oct in

Canada. We stole fresh onions and potatoes from the fields for dinner, kinda a tradition.

I was able to visit my parents grave and put mums on Mum's, she loved mums, and I love and miss them.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at the house with my son Colin and Kathy's daughter Lauren.

We havd Christmas with Kathy's kids and grandaughter.

Then Christmas morning Kathy flew to Indians to spend Christmas with her Mom, sister and 2 brothers in Indiana. I stayed here to keep the dogs and I had to work. Retail is a hard task master.

We had this picture taken at Kathy's office Christmas party.

I have accepted a Manager position at the JC Penney in Morrow,GA about 45 miles from our house. Hope the gas doesn't go high again.

Kathy is doing well at her job and has some great news to give .....but it willl have to wait a week or so....stay tuned.

260 Miles.
Well today we went for a quick trip to Fredericksburg, VA .
On the way we stopped at Montpelier, James Madison's home.
It was at Montpelier where Madison researched past democracies and conceived of the system of government that became our republic. He and Dolly were not home so we moved on. We did get a pic of his temple and the grounds.After stopping we can across the park where John Leland and James Madison had their meeting to hammer out the constitution position on the separation of church and state. Moving along we found a place Tom wanted to see. We could get no closer than .7 th of mile so Kathy stayed with the car and Tom walked in through the corn. So here is the grave of "Stonewall" Jackson's left arm. He was wounded by his own troups and the arm was saw off. The chaplin buired it here at his home. Just away from the Wilderness Battlefield.
Now you know why Gen. Robert E. Lee called Jackson his "righthand man ". (sorry I had to)
Speaking of Gen. Lee we visited the headquartes and battlefield lookout point over Fredericksburg. Here is Kathy at the vantage point. The trees have grown but the town is a mile down the slope. We had a nice 20 minute hike up to the site. If you open this pic you might see the church steeples.

Well all this walking got us hungry.
So I surprised Kathy with a trip to a restaurant I had looked up on the internet. The name is Tim's II and it is on the Potomac River.

Big deal I know, but we are standing in Virginia and the restaurant is in Maryland! The border is the river bank not the middle of the river. So we had Maryland Crab Cakes in Maryland!
This is a warfside dinning and here comes a new customer.

We had crab cake starters and then Kathy had Fish Tacos! I had a crab cake sandwich, terrific!!!
Great lunch and a good time was had by all. The staff was busy as the TS Hanna was bearing down on the area and they were expecting high winds and tides.
We enjoyed our lunch and our historic tour then headed home.
I took many pics on the way of things to waymark.
Back to the resort to a late dinner and get ready to leave in the morning.

We started the day at a farmers market. We bought fresh corn,tomatoes and some great sticky buns form a Mennonite baker.
We then spent a few hours at Natural Bridge. Click here to see the pics.
We saw Foamhenge : "It is, Mark points out, the only American Stonehenge that really is an exact replica of the time-worn original. "I went to great pains to shape each 'stone' to its original shape," he tells us, fact-checking his designs and measurements with the man who gives tours of Stonehenge in England. Mark has even consulted a local "psychic detective" named Tom who has advised him on how to position Foamhenge so that it is astronomically correct." Too funny!!!

We made it home and did a bbq of steak, shrimp,baked potato and the fresh corn with tomatoes.
Super dinner.

Today we toured the resort and looked at the amenities.
Spent the afternoon napping, shouting "Fore" across our backyard,
reading and catching up on e-mails. Tom had a good nap, and still had
his bronchitis, So Kathy ran off for an hour of pampering, and facial.

Just a restful vacation day.

Monday 9/1/2008 Washington DC

Round trip 286 miles.

After doing all the research and getting many opinions about how to get to and maneuver in DC it looked like do not drive, parking does not exist, take the Metro and DO NOT go on a holiday.

So Labor Day of course we drove!!
Had a nice breakfast then did a easy drive hitting a few caches on the way.
Pulled into DC and quickly found a parking spot on the tidal basin next to the FDR Monument. We walked around form there visiting many monuments. Washington, WWII, FDR, Korean War, Lincoln Memorial and around the reflecting pool. Stood in the place where King gave his "I have a Dream" speech for the 13th time. Loved the visit.

Then on to Arlington National Cemetery. JFK's Jackie O, and Robert Kennedys grave. Audie Murphy, Joe Louis and the tomb of the unknowns. Got to see the changing of the guard. That was special.

No problems with crowds and parking was great.
Then we had dinner and drove home.
We plan on going back to DC Thursday, maybe George will have time for us then.

Just a small circle trip today of 110 miles.

Today we toured the Luray Caverns one of the largest systems in the eastern US. We did choose the busiest day of the year for them. Wow there was many people. Still we had a great time. We took many pix which we will post to Picasa but for now, follow the link above to view the professional pix. The caverns are beautiful.

We had lunch at a old local place called Brookside, which is beside a babbling brook. The pork chop sandwich was "out of this world"! They also have cabins you can rent.

After lunch we drove south down the Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah National Park. As their site reads."Gazing across the horizon from the peaks of Shenandoah National Park it’s hard to believe you are just 75 miles from the bustle of our nation’s capital. Take Skyline Drive along the crest of the mountains through the woods and past spectacular vistas. Hike in the shade of oak trees along the Appalachian Trail, discover the stories from Shenandoah’s past, or just relax in the wonder of wilderness."

We did have a great time here. The nice winding drive on a perfect day enjoying the views.
We did view a Black Bear Cub about 2 1/2 feet tall but he scampered off before we could get the camera up to shoot.

We did a hike to the summit of one area called Hawksbill. It was about an hour to the top and about 20 minutes down. Gravity worked with us on the return. LOL. The summit was 4,000 ft.

On the way Kathy spotted a doe and a buck. She was able to get very close to take some pictures. We will have more on Picasa later but here you can see how close she was able to get.

We also met a very nice couple who were on the trail with there dog, Bradley. They also where able to get close to get some pix. Then we shared stories and since they work in DC, they gave us insight on parking and getting around DC.

Then we stopped by a local Italian Bistro, ordered a pizza to go and back to the condo.
With all the walking we ate relaxed then crashed.

Acworth GA to Masssanutten, VA

605 Miles

We intended to get on the road by 4 AM but didn’t leave until 5:15 AM. So we never made it to the event in Damascus, VA.

At lunch we saw this neat burger drive thru building in Bristol TN.

Just as we crossed into VA Kathy saw this huge Cross at a Church. She got this shot as we speed past.

We did cache along the way and did make it to Damascus and did 2 virtuals there. We walked on the Appalachian Trail for a bit and looked around town. We met one of the proprietors of the famous Mt. Rogers Outfitter store in Damascus. 17 years ago started hiking the AT at Springer Mt in GA. He got to Damascus and met the owner of the store which was brand new. He liked the town and stayed, then he joined in on the store and as he told Kathy today “has had a long run of zero days on the trail since then.” Hiker speak for a day camped on the trail that you rest and get “zero” miles that day..

People can purchase memorial pavers to have placed in the sidewalk in fron t of the store. They cost $50 and are drawn and glazed by a local artist Nacy Lamb. "In the town of Damascus, there's an outdoor gallery where anyone any time can view Nancy Lamb's art work. It's the sidewalk on the street in front of the outdoor supply shop. It's called the "Friendship Path". The town of Damascus contracted with Lamb to do a fundraiser to brick the sidewalk, at the same time creating a historical record for their town and a tribute to the hikers who regularly stop by on their way along the Appalachian Trail.

Then we headed north to the resort. Here are a few pix of our room.

Labour Day Week Trip

Kathy and I will be leaving this Saturday the 30Th very early in the AM. We will be heading to Massanutten Resort in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. We hope to make a Breakfast Event Cachin' on the Creeper

The event will be a good start.

We will be at the resort all week and hope to make many day trips. Some areas that we are looking at are, two cavern excursions, maybe a winery tour, a day in D.C. a ride along the Skyline Highway of the National park. Some Civil War Battlefields, Presidential Homes and doing some caching on the way!

We will post daily to show where we go!!!!

Saturday July 5th Breakfast with friends

Well both Kathy and I had to work July 4th, 5th and 6th but we did have time to have a breakfast event.
Corey - Team PEZ returned form his Down Under trip and shared stories about the trip.

We enjoyed followship and of course food with about 20 of our Geocaching friends.

On a personal note this is the anniversary of my Mom's birth, in 1915. SHe would have been 93 today. Miss you Mom.

Now today is a work day noon to nine, gotta love retail! We were able to get to a breakfast event to see the Crew from the Lost Satellite Reception: Tales from the Mountain

Hope they have fun and grab a lot of caches. We have tosettle for one smiley today.

I did get another Waymark done. It is a Sit By Me Statue. Discussing world issues with Franklin D. Roosevelt
